30th World AIDS Day (2018)

The year 2018 marked the 30th commemoration of World AIDS Day, with a special focus on HIV testing. Expanding access to HIV testing is essential to ensuring that more people access prevention and care services.

The day’s theme – Know your status – presented an opportunity to take stock of how far we have come in reaching the 2020 targets. Latest UNAIDS estimates showed that 75% of the 37 million people living with HIV know their status, 79% of those who know their status are on treatment, and 81% of people on treatment are virally suppressed. So there is still room for improvement.

Unitaid is leading the charge in investing in innovative technologies to close the testing gap, including user-friendly self-tests for young people and adults and rapid, point-of-care tests for infants. It has also funded new technologies for scaling up viral load testing, particularly in francophone Africa.
