Unitaid welcomes the United Kingdom’s latest Multilateral Development Review which sets rigorous performance standards for the multilateral agencies that the UK financially supports while calling for more transparency, increased value for money and greater accountability.

Unitaid was rated in the review as a “very good” match with UK development objectives and as “good” in terms of organisational strength. It was one of only 6 agencies to score good or very good on either index in the review of 38 agencies that the UK supports.

The report noted that since 2014, “Unitaid has pursued far-reaching reforms, identifying the value it adds within the global health system, transforming its operating model and delivering impressive progress on efficiency and cost control.”

The review described Unitaid’s reforms since an earlier assessment conducted in 2013 as “transformational.”

Unitaid’s Executive Director Lelio Marmora said: “The UK government has given a strong vote of confidence for the innovative work that we do to end HIV, tuberculosis and malaria.”

The latest UK review also concluded that the multilateral system was not living up to its full potential “because agencies, and the wider UN family, are not working together.” It called for less competition and duplication between organizations and closer coordination instead.
