Unitaid board commemorates late British politician Jo Cox

UNITAID interrupted a Board meeting to commemorate British Labour party politician Jo Cox, who was shot and stabbed in Birstall, in Northern England, on Thursday.

“I invite you all to stand up and observe a minute’s silence to honour the memory of this remarkable woman,” said UNITAID Chair Philippe Douste-Blazy.

Mohga Kamal-Yanni, a senior health policy adviser at Oxfam and a former colleague of the late British Labour Party politician said Cox was passionate in her commitment to social justice and understood the challenges of fighting the three diseases.

“Everything you read about her is true. She believed fervently in justice and in human rights. She had outstanding qualities,” said Kamal-Yanni, who first met Cox when the late politician worked as an intern with a British Member of the European Parliament.

Cox later worked with Kamal-Yanni at Oxfam before entering politics.
