A new report “Reimagining global health: advancing people-centered solutions,” published today, highlights how Unitaid’s model is not only delivering results now, but also laying the foundation for more sustainable, country-driven progress in the years ahead. As global health systems face growing pressure and traditional development models evolve, Unitaid calls for smarter, more integrated approaches to health investments.

In his foreword to the report, Unitaid Executive Director Dr. Philippe Duneton reflects on this pivotal moment for global health. While the past two decades have seen unprecedented progress – tens of millions of people accessing HIV treatment, dramatic reductions in malaria deaths, and shorter, safer TB regimens – today’s environment demands a new kind of response.

“The context is changing. Funding is tightening. Operational models are shifting. And health systems – especially in low- and middle-income countries – are under growing strain,” writes Dr. Duneton. “To preserve these hard-won gains and continue making progress, we must rethink how we work. This moment calls for renewed collaboration, grounded in country leadership and guided by the expertise of diverse global health partners.”

The report highlights how Unitaid is responding to this moment by making strategic investments that support innovative health products and approaches while strengthening health systems to deliver them. Drawing on recent successes across Unitaid’s portfolio, it demonstrates how the organization’s approach to access to health innovations – based on efficiency, integration, and sustainability – helps countries introduce and scale up new tools more quickly, effectively, and equitably.

It brings together recent successes from Unitaid’s programmatic priorities and features a forward look at the pipeline of game-changing innovations on the horizon – tools with the potential to significantly improve health outcomes, build resilience, and support countries on the path to universal health coverage.

But beyond products, the report also underscores a broader value proposition: that targeted innovation, when coupled with strong partnerships and country engagement, can help health systems get more value from every health dollar – while supporting a transition toward more sustainable, domestically financed health programs.

“Our model brings together partners across the value chain to tackle access barriers from every angle – availability, affordability, demand, supply and delivery,” says Dr. Duneton. “While others focus on access, our approach is distinct: we coordinate a range of partners to tackle multiple barriers all at once, to unlock access quickly and enable countries to scale up new tools more effectively. This helps health systems get more value from every health dollar.”

As global health seeks to implement the Lusaka Agenda through more sustainable, country-led approaches, Unitaid is ready to support countries in introducing new health innovations – reaching those who need them most while helping to build more resilient health systems.
