Unitaid seeks to address the systemic barriers that undermine access to critical maternal and newborn health products with new funding opportunity

The deadline for submitting proposals is 20 March 2026. Join the webinar on 28 January 2026 to learn more.

Global progress on maternal and newborn health needs to be accelerated.  Yet persistent gaps in access to quality, life-saving products remain a major barrier to reducing deaths of mothers and babies in low- and middle-income countries.

As access to care during pregnancy and childbirth has increased, complications and deaths have declined. But to continuing progress now depends on quality – today, more women and newborns die from poor-quality care than from the inability to receive care. Too often, care is undermined by limited availability of essential medicines to treat common complications such as pre-eclampsia, postpartum hemorrhage, anemia, prematurity and others.

Together with our partners, Unitaid has invested in accelerating access to newer and under-utilized diagnostic devices, and medicines for prevention and treatment of these conditions, driving important progress in adoption and early scale up. However, even as products gain policy endorsement and enter national programs, systemic barriers to broad access remain.

Unitaid is therefore seeking to fund a new program in multiple countries that addresses the systemic enablers of access to quality-assured maternal and newborn health products – such as enhanced quantification methods, value-based procurement systems and focused market incentives – through targeted, innovative approaches.

Proposals should include ways to support cross-country learning and leverage civil society and community leadership to strengthen awareness, accountability and equitable access.
