The problem

Respiratory distress is a major cause of illness and death in newborns and babies. Medical oxygen is an essential, lifesaving treatment for children with impaired breathing; however, it remains a luxury for a large proportion of severely ill children admitted to hospitals in low- and middle-income countries. Even when oxygen is available, it is toxic if used at 100% concentration. Oxygen blenders, which mix oxygen with air to make it safe, are expensive and require both electricity and pressurized air, severely limiting access to treatment in resource-limited health settings.

Our response

Two innovative new products are helping treat infants in need of oxygen therapy. Vayu’s oxygen delivery devices allow babies to access medical oxygen without the need for electricity or a compressed air tank. The bubble CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) device is a non-invasive way of ventilating newborns who are struggling to breathe. The oxygen blender prevents the eye, lung and brain damage associated with giving young children a pure oxygen supply.

Our support has helped Vayu through the late-stage development and regulatory approval of these critical tools, which are providing low-cost ways to treat babies with vital medical oxygen in low- and middle-income countries.
