The problem
Medical oxygen is an essential, lifesaving medicine for treating a range of illnesses, and is essential for surgery and critical care. However, medical oxygen is often unavailable; fewer than 50% of health facilities in many low- and middle-income countries have uninterrupted access. Inadequate financing, insufficient infrastructure, lack of trained workforce to maintain and repair equipment, and prohibitively high costs are some of the challenges limiting access to oxygen.
Our response
The Global Oxygen Alliance (GO2AL) is a multistakeholder collaborative that seeks to boost access to medical oxygen by harnessing partnerships to do more than any organization could do alone. One of the main goals of the alliance is to support low- and middle-income countries to develop and implement costed oxygen plans and strategies to increase oxygen access at all levels of the health care system.
Our partners
GO2AL currently consists of 20 member organizations and delegations. It is hosted by Unitaid, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). It is co-chaired by Unitaid and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria and vice-chaired by the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).
