Overview
The Medicines Supply Resilience (MedSuRe) Africa project, funded by Unitaid and led by USP, in collaboration with a consortium of partners, aims to strengthen the availability of quality-assured medicines across Africa while advancing climate-smart, sustainable, and resilient supply chain practices.
Africa accounts for a disproportionate burden of preventable and treatable diseases and conditions, including HIV/AIDS, malaria, and postpartum hemorrhage (PPH), all of which remain leading causes of morbidity and mortality in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). According to the World Health Organization (WHO), nearly 26 million people in Africa are living with HIV, more than 80 percent of maternal deaths from PPH occur in Africa and South Asia, and Africa accounts for approximately 94 percent of malaria cases and 95 percent of deaths from the disease.
Despite this, Africa imports more than 70 percent of health commodities, leaving the continent vulnerable to supply chain disruptions that threaten public health and socio-economic stability.
To address these challenges, MedSuRe Africa is working to strengthen regional pharmaceutical manufacturing across the pharmaceutical value chain, from drug development to delivery and beyond, and reduce dependency on imports by supporting regional manufacturers in producing priority medicines.
